EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK
The lemonade woman’s eyes widened. “No.” How she made such a small word draw out into three syllables, Sophie hadn’t the slightest. And apparently, the woman lost the ability to shut her mouth. “Surely, as a preacher’s wife, you can indeed play the piano?”
“Ladies.” Margaret arrived behind her, placing her hands on the back of Sophie’s chair as if to offer support. Good thing, because she needed it. Oh, how Sophie wished the chair beside her was open so Margaret could weather this storm near her. “We have at least four pianists in our congregation, not counting the learning children. And I don’t think you are eager to find a replacement for your bench on Sunday morning quite yet? Am I right, Judith?”
“Well, no, but I…” Judith bustled, the lemonade slashing inside the crystal pitcher. Her nose rose so high it seemed she was trying to guess what someone planned to cook for supper. “Through the years, all of Hillside’s preacher wives have…”
Sophie’s cheeks heated. She eyed the lemonade pitcher. Perhaps she could take it and press it to her face? This would have been an excellent moment to have had one of Momma’s fans. How was she going to convince these women she had to be voted in as their pastor’s wife? She had to marry Amos. Her future depended on it.
The Mail-Order Brides Collection captures the undeniable bravery displayed by history’s real-life women who answered the call to fulfill the need for brides in the untamed West. Although I enjoyed all of the stories, Amos and Sophie’s story by Megan Besing was one of my favorites! This couple was so endearing! Their immediate attraction upon meeting was so sweet as was their tentative steps into getting to know one another before marrying. As their interactions increased so did their tenderness for one another. I especially loved how Amos referred to her as “his Sophie.” When it is discovered that Sophie arrived pregnant, Amos’s reaction and decision about their betrothal is astounding. Besing succeeds in offering readers a satisfying love story exemplifying forgiveness, grace and commitment when it is least expected.
