About the Book:
Upon her father’s death in debtor’s prison, Aurelie Harcourt has no other option but to go live with wealthy relatives she barely knows in her father’s childhood home. Her only comfort is that her father has left her his famous pen name, Nathaniel Droll, along with his yet unfinished next novel about her mother, Lady Jayne’s, unexplained disappearance. Accepting her fate, Aurelie decides to use her new freedom and writing skills to finish her father’s book while investigating for herself the mystery of her mother’s disappearance. While her new family’s harsh reception causes her grief, she is able to find solace by creating characters based on her estranged family members for her book that showcases their not-so-desirable traits. However, one houseguest, Silas Rotherham, not only becomes her ally and friend, but also provides Aurelie with stimulating conversation and a romantic interest. As she discovers more and more clues about her absent mother, Aurelie also uncovers secrets about her father and her parent’s shocking courtship.
Politano has offered readers a remarkable debut novel filled with mystery and intrigue fueled by family secrets, resentment, and scandal! She expertly guides readers on a path of discovering what happened to Lady Jayne only to completely shock and stun them when the truth is revealed. I couldn’t put the book down! Also of note is the sweet friendship and romance that develops between Aurelie and Silas. Again, Politano offers multiple unexpected twists in the plot for the romance angles. Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed Politano’s poetic writing style and the nuggets of literary gold found at the opening of each chapter and dotted throughout the pages in between. Bravo to a five-star first novel, Ms. Politano!
