About the Book:
The daughter of a pagan high priest, Sofea finds solace from her troubles in the freedom of the ocean. But when marauders attack her village on the island of Sicily, she and her cousin are taken across the sea to the shores of Canaan.
Eitan has lived in Kedesh, a City of Refuge, for the last eleven years, haunted by a tragedy in his childhood and chafing at the boundaries placed on him. He is immediately captivated by Sofea, but revealing his most guarded secret could mean drawing her into the danger of his past.
As threats from outside the walls loom and traitors are uncovered within, Sofea and Eitan are plunged into the midst of a murder plot. Will they break free from the shackles of the past in time to uncover the betrayal and save their lives and the lives of those they love?
Cossette consistently delivers intriguing characters and entertaining plots including this sophomore book in the Cities of Refuge Series. We were first introduced to Eitan as a little boy in the first book, A Light on the Hill. It was great to see what has happened with Eitan, Moriyah, and Darek. Sofea was especially interesting to me as her culture was so completely different from the Hebrews'. Moriyah's gentle ways of demonstrating her faith and Eitan's commitment to his Nazirite vows were such beautiful examples of how consistently living out our faith can change the hearts of those around us. The rivalry between Eitan and Nadir offered many tense moments foreshadowing a deeper conflict to come. Although Sofea's conversion and her and Eitan's blooming romance was the central plot, my favorite part of the story was actually the healing that occurred in Eitan and Darek's relationship as Darek demonstrated unconditional love and the true heart of a father willing to do anything to protect his child. While this story did not captivate me the way A Light on the Hill did, it was still a great read!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. A review was not required but was voluntary and contains my own thoughts and opinions regarding this literary work.
